We talk about love as if it were weather. We fall into it. It happens to us. Sometimes it fades, and we speak about that as if it were also beyond our control, like a season changing.

I understand why. The early stage of love really does feel like something arriving from outside. But I have come to believe that this description, repeated often enough, does real damage to the way we build relationships.
