Every one of us is handed a set of beliefs before we are old enough to examine them. Our families give us a religion or the absence of one, a sense of what success looks like, and ideas about marriage, money, work and honour. By the time we can think for ourselves, these ideas are already part of the furniture.
What we inherit and what we choose
We are handed beliefs before we can examine them. Choosing them later is a form of respect.
